Traffic Tickets / Reduction Request Process

THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE DOES NOT DISCUSS TRAFFIC TICKET(S) BY PHONE. ALL INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO DEAL WITH TRAFFIC TICKET(S) CAN BE FOUND ONLINE.

THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE DOES NOT DISCUSS TRAFFIC TICKET(S) AT LOCAL COURTS.

Note that you are always welcome to speak to an attorney regarding your traffic ticket(s). You may also discuss your options with the court.

Traffic Diversion Program- An online course offered by Advent eLearning. The course is similar to a Defensive Driver Course, where you will learn about the consequences of driving behaviors. Completion of the course shows a willingness to improve driving behavior and may result in the best traffic reduction. 

OPTIONS

DO NOT SEND A COPY OF YOUR TICKET WITHOUT INDICATING WHICH OPTION YOU ARE SELECTING.

1.PLEA OF GUILTY – Plea by mail (no reduction being requested)

    a.  Follow the instructions on your ticket(s) to plea guilty by mail, under Section A (in the right-hand column)

    b. Make a copy of your ticket(s)

    c. Mail in your signed ticket(s) directly to the court by registered, Certified, or First-Class Mail, with Return Receipt Requested. 

2.  PLEA NOT OF GUILTY – TRAFFIC DIVERSION REDUCTION PROGRAM

    a.  Follow the instructions on your ticket(s) to plea not guilty by mail, under Section B (in the right-hand column).

    b.  Make a copy of your ticket(s).

    c.  Mail in your signed ticket(s) with plea of not guilty, directly to the court by registered, Certified, or First-Class Mail, with Return 

         Receipt Requested.

    d. You are responsible for contacting the court to request an adjournment. Our office does not grant adjournments, only the court may 

         do so. You should adjourn your case for 30 – 60 days to give this office the time to process your request. (See link on homepage for

     e. Follow step by step instructions for Traffic Diversion Program as indicated below.

3. PLEA OF NOT GUILTY – POSSIBLE REDUCTION

     a.  Follow the instructions on your ticket(s) to plea not guilty by mail, under Section B (in the right-hand column).

     b.  Make a copy of your ticket(s).

     c.  Mail in your signed ticket(s) with plea of not guilty, directly to the court by registered, Certified, or First-Class Mail, with Return 

          Receipt Requested.

    d. You are responsible for contacting the court to request an adjournment. Our office does not grant adjournments, only the court may 

        do so. You should adjourn your case for 30 – 60 days to give this office the time to process your request. (See link on homepage for

    e. Email a copy of your ticket(s) to datickets@lewiscounty.ny.gov

    f. In a short paragraph, indicate your reasoning for requesting a reduction. 

   g. Your email must clearly state that you are requesting a reduction without taking the program. 

4. PLEA OF NOT GUILTY – REQUESTING TRIAL

     a.  Follow the instructions on your ticket(s) to plea not guilty by mail, under Section B (in the right-hand column).

     b.  Make a copy of your ticket(s).

     c.  Mail in your signed ticket(s), directly to the court by registered, Certified, or First-Class Mail, with Return Receipt Requested.

     d. If you are not interested in pleading guilty or a reduction though our Traffic Diversion Program, the court will advise you of your next 

          court date or trial date. 


TRAFFIC DIVERSION PROGRAM

This program is only available for traffic infractions only. This program does not apply to any vehicle and Traffic Law ticket(s) that are part of Section 1192, or any other traffic ticket(s) deemed to be unclassified misdemeanors or felony level crimes. 

We will not process your request if any of the above-listed items are not provided.

By making a reduction application, you are waiving the in-court pretrial conference to consider a reduction application. 

STEPS

The course is also available on DVD for those without Internet access. Please contact Advent at (866) 494-8556 to request the course on DVD. 

2. A legible copy of the ticket(s) ( not the original ticket(s)), must be sent by email with your certificate of completion to datickets@lewiscounty.ny.gov

For students who wish to take the course on DVD, please mail a legible copy of the ticket(s) ( not the original ticket(s)), to:

Please allow 2-4 weeks to receive paperwork from our office after our receipt of your email. As stated previously you are responsible for contacting the court to request an adjournment.
