Job Description:


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is an assistant position to the Crew leader in the Department of Recreation, Forestry and Parks, involving light to medium physical effort and is often performed under adverse weather conditions. The employee may be required to work alone but usually works with other members of a crew and work assignments are reviewed while in progress and at their completion by the Crew leader.


  • Assist in the maintenance, development, and repairs of Lewis County recreational trails;
  • Operate a truck, trailer, dump truck, excavator, loader, mowers, trimmer, chainsaws and other equipment or hand tools as needed to maintain and sign the trails;
  • Maintain safety precautions in all work;
  • Assist in the maintenance, transfer and light repair of trucks, equipment, and supplies;
  • Complete reports and update records;
  • Assist in routine maintenance of Lewis County owned parks including mow lawns, maintain water lines, trash pickup and disposal, supply replacement, cleaning facilities and fireplaces, stain repair and maintain picnic tables, fireplaces and signs and assist in maintenance requirements;
  • Assist in marking of timber;
  • All other duties as assigned.


Knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and practices common to recreational trails, including but not limited to chain saws, ability to operate a truck, trailer, tractor, dump truck, excavator, loader, mowers, trimmers, chainsaws and other equipment or hand tools preferred, understand and carry out verbal and written instructions, ability to deal courteously and tactfully with coworkers and the public, physical condition commensurate with demands of position, knowledge of handheld GPS beneficial but not required.


Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years work experience in forestry, trails, parks or similar work involving construction logging or maintenance; or

Special Necessary Requirements:

Required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid CDL License as required by the New York State Department of Motor vehicles.



DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:   The work involves responsibility for the performance of general laboring or construction tasks, requiring physical endurance and a willingness to perform arduous tasks in inclement weather.  The incumbent generally uses hand and power tools to perform the work but may occasionally operate automotive equipment under close supervision of a qualified operator.  The work is performed under direct supervision.  Does related work as required.


  • Performs a variety of manual labor tasks subject to inclement weather conditions and often in an unpleasant environment;
  • Assists in the maintenance or construction of roads, streets, utility and drainage systems by digging and backfilling trenches, spreading asphalt, sand and gravel;
  • Assists in preparation, laying out and maintenance of athletic fields and areas designated for beautification by clearing, grading, reseeding, weeding and lining;
  • Paints fences, benches, picnic tables, etc.;
  • Operates power driven tools and equipment such as compressors, drills, mixers, pumps and mowers;
  • Uses hand tools such as shovels, axes, scythes, forks and rakes in grounds maintenance and beautification work;
  • Loads and unloads trucks and stacks materials and supplies;
  • Acts as flagman on highway jobs, directs trucks at loading and unloading sites;
  • Operates power tools and equipment such as saws, mixers, jackhammers and tampers;
  • Cleans vehicles and buildings;
  • Assists in erecting or assembling snow fences, barricades, picnic tables and recreation equipment;
  • Performs general clean-up work such as removing debris, raking leaves, cutting grass and weeds, shoveling snow, and assisting in the collection of rubbish and litter from public lands and facilities.


Willingness to perform routine manual tasks; ability to repeatedly lift 50 pounds or more; ability to follow simple oral or written instructions; willingness to work outdoors under all weather conditions; physical endurance; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
